Falcon Security CEO quits after racism saga  Comments
November 5, 2009

Falcon Security CEO and director Ben Burger resigned on Thursday in an attempt to "stabilise" the company after it became embroiled in a racism incident.

"I've never made myself guilty of any form of racism, which made taking this decision very difficult," he said in a statement.

"However, I have to think of the employees of the company and Falcon's long-term future. It has become clear to me that, particularly from the labour union's side, I am regarded to be part of the problem."

Burger was arrested at a Sun International staff party last month after police received complaints that a CD was played from the company's stand "containing remixed lyrics of the national anthem" which called former president Nelson Mandela a "kaffir".

A Falcon Security employee had apparently placed the personal CD next to the sound system, and it was played for about 15 seconds before being removed.

"Ben Burger has resigned with immediate effect as CEO and director of Falcon Security following the playing of an offensive song by one of the company's employees at a function at Sun City last month," a statement released by his public relations company on Thursday read.

"Burger said that the incident had caused the company immeasurable damage and he hoped that his resignation would help stabilise the situation." - Sapa

I really think the resignation was an overreaction. This is not to make light of the case, I disagree totally that such a cd should be played. Nevertheless, I believe that the CEO's job is to steer a company through difficult times and if this is the most difficult time the company has been through, the CEO should be firmly at the helm, even if he is regarded by the union as part of the problem. (In fact I would say that a union, by definition, always regards management of a company as part of the problem) I also want to challenge the statement that the cd called Madiba the K word. If I am to understand reports, they say that the word and the name of Nelson Mandela were both used in the song, which weakens the emotional response. Let's move past the blinkers that are racism, guys. Let's look at the ethics and the logic of a decision to "resign with immediate effect"....

If only people in govt will resign when they mess up. But no, they get a slap on the wrist and continue in their job.

It is just a pity that not more persons in powerful positions are prepared to do the same.

It seems that only white people can be racist if a black person insults a white it is fine.

SA needs to adapt to keep high standard of accounting
South Africa has long been reputed to produce some of the world's best auditors. This was given credence when the World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Survey for 2009 to 2010 ranks us second out of 133 countries for our auditing and reporting standards. We are in the top 10 for eight other measures of financial market sophistication, and for a country that is only the world's 24th largest economy measured in terms of gross domestic product (GDP), this is good going.[Full Story...]
