Anglo American: Venezuelan mine to be investigated
June 4, 2009
Anglo American would co-operate with an inquiry by Venezuela's national legislature into possible health and environmental damage from a company-run nickel mine, it said yesterday. The Loma de Niquel mine "takes pride in its strong environmental record", Anglo said. "We are happy to collaborate with any investigation." The mine put thousands of lives at risk, Carlos Medina, the president of the Evaluation, Prosecution and Control Subcommission of the country's National Assembly, said on Tuesday on the legislature's website. Environmental arguments enabled Venezuela to block Crystallex International and Gold Reserve from developing the country's biggest proven gold deposit last year. President Hugo Chavez has said he wanted new mines to be joint ventures with the government. - Bloomberg
