Mauritius: Joblessness rises to 8%

Unemployment in Mauritius rose to 8 percent in the first quarter this year from 6.2 percent in the previous quarter, but was down slightly from the same period a year earlier, the Central Statistics Office said yesterday. The downturn is hurting the island's key export sectors. Statistics showed 44 900 unemployed. Forecasts put the unemployment rate for 2009 at 8 percent, up from 7.2 percent last year. - Reuters
