J Sainsbury fattens profit

British grocer J Sainsbury posted first-half profit towards the top end of forecasts by luring cash-strapped shoppers away from up-market rivals with promotions and a big push in own-brand goods.

Britain's third-biggest supermarket group said yesterday that profit before tax and one-off items rose 13 percent to £272million (R4.3 billion) in the 28 weeks to October 4. – Reuters
