Trade union Solidarity has lodged an application with the Labour Court for an urgent interdict to prevent DRDGold from retrenching workers at its Blyvooruitzicht mine. It said yesterday: "The company plans on retrenching 1 300 of the mine's employees". It claimed there had been no consultations with the union, but some of its members had been notified and retrenched. DRDGold's spokesman James Duncan said Solidarity was not recognised at the mine, so the company "was not obliged to engage with Solidarity", but it had made an informal approach to the trade union. - Sapa
