End of a legend as VWSA ends Citi Golf production  Comments

Model would not be viable at new plant, says company

November 3, 2009

By Roy Cokayne

Volkswagen South Africa (VWSA) is phasing out production of its legendary Citi Golf to prepare its Uitenhage plant for the production of a series of new high-volume models with high local content next year.

David Powels, the company's managing director, stressed yesterday that the company was not discontinuing the Citi Golf model because of any decline in customer demand. Indeed, he noted, there was still a significant level of demand for the model.

Powels said the prime reason VWSA was discontinuing the Citi Golf was that it was no longer commercially viable for the company and its suppliers to produce it on a platform that only produced between 20 000 and 25 000 units a year.

He said the company had decided to end production of Citi Golf in August because of the massive rebuilding that had been taking place at its plant over the past 18 months.

VWSA has invested R3.5bn in its plant over this period, renovating the facility and upgrading technology and model specific tooling related to planned new model introductions next year.

Powels stressed the end of Citi Golf production did not symbolise the end of sales of the brand and it had built up a huge amount of stock prior to the end of production that it intended to sell into the first quarter of next year.

"It was not possible to continue producing the car simultaneously to the massive rebuilding of our plant," he said.

Powels said the stock it had built up was in addition to the 1 000 limited final edition Citi Golf Mk1's just launched, which was the company's way of paying homage to the original Golf 1.

He said the last Beetle rolled off the production line in Uitenhage in January 1979 after a production run of almost 28 years and sales of 288 353 units, while VWSA produced 377 484 Citi Golfs in 25 years.

VWSA would be launching a comprehensive range of new products into the market next year, which would enable the company to compete in all the major segments of the market.

Though Powels declined to comment on exactly how many products it would be launching, he confirmed it was "many more than two".

These new products included an entry segment model, but he did not expect the pricing would be at the level of the current Citi Golf at about R84 700.

Powels said most of the company's suppliers for the Citi Golf were also suppliers to other platforms and they were already producing for the new products.

There were, however, a handful of suppliers that VWSA might not be able to carry on doing business with.

But he stressed that these suppliers had contracts with other original equipment manufacturers and the company was not expecting any suppliers to close shop with the end of Citi Golf production.

Powels said the Citi Golf platform had about 740 workers and none of them would lose their jobs because of the end of production of the brand.

He said these workers would be retrained and reskilled so they could be integrated into the company's new platform strategy, which was a two platform strategy with high local content - of 70 percent - and higher volumes.

It's a pity that VWSA is still going. The citi golf lost all credibility when VW decided to palm these pieces of rubbish off on the unsuspecting public and then refuse to take any responsibility when the wheels literally fell off them a few months down the line. I agree with Mr Jones; Goodbye and good riddance. I wonder how much longer the public will allow themselves to be fooled by these charlatans. I wonder what all the public servants are going to do now without their zippy little harassment-mobiles? Oh that's right, they'll probably be upgraded to top of the range mercs...

So sad to see you go my friend. I am the very proud owner of a VW Velociti 1.6i. His name is Girtz, (as in the sound that velcro makes when you pull it apart, as this little rascal sticks to the road like bubblegum to a blanket). The production halt did not come as a shock, i just feel rather sad to see them go. All its friends are gone too, the Champ and the Tazz. My golf was the 2006 Uitenhage plant demo, Tossa blue and in perfect condition, which I bought in Cape Town last year. When looking at buying my first real car I had many options to suit my budget, but very few suited my lifestyle. The car I was looking for had to be cheap to buy and maintain, fun to drive, reliable and pretty new. But most importantly it had to have street cred as standard. There is not a single other car in the South African market that offers me this at the sub R100k bracket. Maybe only the Corsa bakkie - limited by 2 seats though. I am a 25year old, adventurous active young lad. I enjoy the outdoors, rubberduck racing, motocross and I am an industrial designer by trade with a passion for cars. The other cars within my budget included the examples listed below: Bottom of the range current 1.4 Polo or Top of the range Velociti? Opel Corsa 1.4i – zippy, but too plasticy and has a common aire to them, mostly smokers and tappets drive them, and have to put big mags on to make them look like something. Old Polo - over priced, nothing special. Yaris – expensive, no soul, slow, gay small wheels and straw for exhaust. Clio - Fat, slow. Boring, French, comfortable ride though. Sandero – Gay, fat, French. Zero cred. Picanto - slow puny korean girly car without a boot. Fiat Palio - Slow, expensive, gay. The Hyundai Atoz - Super Gay!!! Tata, Chev, Proton ,Geely - Honestly WTF? No other car within the price bracket offers me what the Velociti offers me. And a big bonus was that I read the design and marketing thesis conducted for the car by the 2 Cape Tech students who worked on the launch of it, I saw where each cool component was sourced from and the thought that went into it. When the Velociti came out everything to it was new, clever and cool. Since then the lazy people over at VWSA simply changed the name a few times and made all the money they could off it. As a designer this was very cruel for me to see. The 15" mags, was so cool when I first saw it! Exclusive! Now every other citi has those mags as standard. And I am very disappointed by the last model, come now VWSA, that’s not a cherry on the cake model!! this is! http://www.zoopedup.net/index.php?showtopic=27616 Had you given it some more thought, not be so stingy & greedy and possibly consulted with lovers of the brand you could have done the following: R32 / V10 Toureg blue. with exclusive mags never seen before by the SA public, not simply the centre cap removed from the velociti (old Lupo) mag, with orange indicators and some vinyls. AS i said that Deep R blue, with propper brakes, 2door body, and an airbag. With the 1.4TSi engine! Now we're talking! If I cared about a 5star rating I would have bought a gay girly car. I don’t care. I want Power and fun! This is Africa, toughen up!! Don’t talk to me about money, you have had 30years to make money! You owe it to the public and lovers of golf! Even if you lose some money on the deal! It will be a legend! And as a green deal, the outgoing polo 1.4tdi engine. This car should give a great 25km per liter!!! But sadly you chose to use as seen before parts, jolt them all together and put a new badge on the boot lid. VWSA, you should be ashamed. Back to my Velociti, I tow a boat with my car, drive it to the beach and launch it from the sand. All this on a budget while having lots of fun, which other car in the range can do this? I load a 130kg motocross bike on my towbar and drive with it to Namibia from Johannesburg! Over bundu's and dongas. With my girlfriend, all my kit and stuff and all her stuff. Overtaking trucks and Sunday drivers with ease, the aircon on and the tunes pumping over the powerful standard mp3 cd player! Which other car in the range can do this? I will gladly send a pic of the bike loaded onto the car, its a sight!!! I have the most fun in this car that I have ever had I a car. It is very fun to drive, with great driver feedback. It is very fast and eats up the miles! I have no trouble overtaking the fast lane hogging morons I have to share a road with in Johannesburg rush hour on a daily basis! I can comfortably cruise at a constant (illegal speed). I have done on numerous occasions 750km on a 50litre tank if I watch my right foot a bit. That is amazing! I love my car. Sure it’s not as safe or as modern as any of the boring cars listed above. It has some rattles and squeaks. Wind noise as standard and I have almost been hijacked a few times. My insurance is ridiculous! R1000+ (More than I would pay for a BMW 135i top of the range) but unlike any of the cars available at the same price, the Citi has a soul. It is a living LEGEND. Thank you. And to all the people that rips on the citi, what will you buy your matric laaitie next year when he goes to varsity?? 1200 sold every month, the numbers don’t lie! Chris Blitz
