Thousands try to beat amnesty deadline May 29, 2007
About 4 000 small business owners a day are rushing their tax amnesty applications to revenue offices nationwide to beat Thursday's deadline, the SA Revenue Service (SARS) said on Tuesday.
"We've seen the queues getting longer," said SARS spokesperson Adrian Lackay.
"We're receiving about 4 000 applications per day nationally."
Lackay added that "far more than 73 000 applications" in total had been received since the amnesty opened on August 1.
SARS expected that a "significant number" of the applicants - possibly 27 percent to 30 percent of them - would be new taxpayers who had never registered or paid tax previously.
"We are very encouraged," he said of the response.
The tax amnesty is for small businesses with a turnover of less than R10-million a year, who defaulted on income tax, VAT or payroll taxes.
The amnesty call centre can be reached on 0860-1212-20 and information is available on the SARS website www.sars.gov.za.
