 OPINION/ ANALYSIS
Weekend marijuana festival hits the Mark
May 4, 2004

If dagga is ever legalised in this country, there may be massive business opportunities in a range of sectors, from pharmaceuticals to textiles.

Then again, who cares?

United Press International reports that British organisers had expected that a weekend marijuana festival in a Birmingham park, timed to coincide with the Global Marijuana March on Saturday, would attract more than 100 fans of the week.

Instead, only one person showed. His name was Mark.

The BBC said that although the city council hadn't liked the idea of the weekend festival because Cannon Hill Park is used by families with children, there was nothing illegal about the event.

Recent legislation in Britain has downgraded marijuana from Class B to Class C, so police no longer automatically arrest those caught in possession of it.

Mark, who refused to give his surname, told the BBC: "Cannabis users aren't the fastest starters, are they?"
