Bobby Godsell has confirmed his resignation as chairman of Eskom with Public Enterprises Minister Barbara Hogan, he said in a statement on Monday.

"During this last week the Eskom board has been able to act decisively," he said.

"Government, particularly as indicated by Minister Hogan's address to Parliament, has given the board the backing it needed. Mpho Makwana has already demonstrated his wise and calm leadership capacities in the press conference he conducted last Thursday."

"The strong management team will soon be strengthened by new appointments in both finance and [human resources]. Eskom is ready to move forward under new leadership. It is this new leadership that must write the new chapter. I have therefore reconfirmed my resignation to Minister Hogan."

Godsell said recently he submitted his resignation as the government had not been supportive of the board's move to oust chief executive officer Jacob Maroga.

His move followed a disagreement between him and Maroga over how the parastatal should be run. Maroga's resignation was confirmed by Eskom's board last Thursday.

In a Talk Radio 702 interview on Friday, Hogan said she would be grateful if Godsell reconsidered his position.

Her office later said it was "up to Mr Godsell if he wants to return to the Eskom board". - Sapa

It would make absolute sense to believe that Mr. Godsell knows full well that he will not be allowed to run Eskom in the best interests of the consumer, the nation: that he will in fact be forced to operate in the interests of the top major shareholders; i.e. the South African Government. The whole situation is clearly a typical example of crude, disgraceful manipulation and exploitation of the nation. Mr. Godsell is to be admired for his refusal to being made a part of the barrel of rotten apples that are corrupting the good fruits of our potentially fruitful and truly exemplary Nation. Until this present Government and their Parastatals and our South African business world realizes that the Godly principles of service to the people, to the Nation, are paramount: that we are all in fact involved in the great people business; that service providers should place themselves second in the equation of life and living, this beautiful Country is destined to become another living testimony to the tears, frustration and failure syndrome that has so typically befallen the rest of the sunniest continent on Earth, known by the whole world as "Darkest Africa." If this is what we are really opting for in our greed, - God can easily arrange it! "Comprehendo???" - Nuff Said!!!

@ntebaleng, you must have arrived on this planet over the weekend, not? As CEO, Maroga is, amongst other things, responsible for strategic planning. More recently he had to present a roadmap moving forward. Well, he could only manage 25 odd pages of which he saw fit to devote 3 to racism! His most brilliant idea was to suggest 3 price increases of 45% each. There are other options, but they require lateral thinking. Do not go back Bobby.

@Cobus. Ntebaleng unfortunately has no interest in the facts. His mind is made up and if the facts dont fit his views, then the facts must be wrong. The sad thing is that thinking like his is pervasive and doesnt help or improve the situation.

@Nujoy. The board, under the guidance of the chairman, determines strategy. The CEO carries it out, he is the person with executive authority over the employees of the company. Its that simple. If the CEO disagrees with the board and does his own thing and this leads to a crisis then the CEO is at fault. If the CEO follows the strategy of the board and things fall apart, then the board is accountable. Maroga disregarded the board and did his own thing and things fell apart - big time. Maroga is the problem and he should be man enough to take responsibility for his actions.

@ntebaleng - like I said to you in another thread (which you obviously ignored seeing you are bleating on about the same distorted facts) - Godsell only joined the board 15 months ago!!! CAN YOU READ AND COMPREHEND?!? It means he WASN'T AROUND with the blackouts! GOT IT?!? Maroga on the other hand ignored reports warning of the impeding coal shortages which led to the blackouts...

Oh dear, here we go again. Ntebaleng, I'm afraid you are carrying on like another one of those Mamparas who will support the appoinment of anybody (no matter their ability or ethics) as long as they keep out the Whitey and preach communistic policies. While we need competent Management like Bobby Godsell to lead business in this country, while we have bafoons like yourself making idiotic and senseless statements that show your lack of business understanding, this country is on a slippery slope

@Tandiwe - in all i have said there is nothing racists and i do not know from which race am i a racist - your comments smack of ignorance - you can perhaps tell me what of significance has Godsell done at Eskom - sure you have nothing to give - debate on facts don't be driven by sentiments - all those who say Godsell is good professionally cannot give a single example of what he has done at Eskom. please justify why you give somebody a big increase for non performance.please justify why you give a big increase to someone you want out.

Ntebaleng,i agree with you 100%, If Godsell was so good, Eskom wouldnt be in crisis now, the CEO is appointed by the board, led by the chairman, in this instance, Godsell.Hogan should be taken to a hearing, how do you begin saying you want the chairman back withoput consulting the rest of the board?what is the rest of the board saying about Godsell?
