Special task team works on case

June 15, 2009 Edition 1

A special task team has been established to co-ordinate action against Barry Tannenbaum and entities associated with him.

It comprises investigators from the Financial Intelligence Centre, the SA Revenue Service, the Reserve Bank, the SA Police Service's serious economic offences unit and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

The NPA's asset forfeiture unit will consider whether any assets can be frozen or forfeited as the proceeds of unlawful activity.

The establishment of the team follows an urgent meeting of law enforcement agencies on Friday to co-ordinate their efforts, clarify terms of reference and decide on a plan of action for an investigation into allegations including fraud, money laundering, tax evasion, as well as foreign exchange control violation. - Roy Cokayne
