1Time to launch new flight between Johannesburg and Maputo  Comments
November 24, 2009

SAA and Mozambican national airline LAM will face tough new competition on one of their most profitable routes in the new year when low cost airline 1Time launches a new service between Johannesburg and Maputo.

Until now the two national airlines have had a monopoly on the route and lack of competition has kept the fares high.

Glenn Orsmond, chief executive of the 1Time group, said he expected 1Time's fares to be 50 percent below below the average cost of flying to Maputo at present.

It would have five flights a week and would also launch package holidays in Maputo on its website, like those it already offered in Zanzibar and was about to offer in Livingstone on the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls.

Comair has also tried to obtain air traffic rights to fly to Maputo. But the application was made in the name of its full service airline and not its low cost division, kulula.com.

Orsmond said 1Time's application was the only one from a low cost airline and he understood that the Mozambican authorities wanted to encourage more incoming passengers through lower fares.

The International Air Transport Authority (IATA) is encouraging African governments to open their borders to more flights to boost their economies through the growth of trade and tourism, and provide more jobs.

1Time launches another new route, from Johannesburg to Livingstone, this week.
