Show of support as Godsell goes  Comments

New acting chair locks Maroga out

November 11, 2009

By Donwald Pressly

Support for Bobby Godsell, who resigned on Monday as chairman of the embattled power parastatal Eskom, poured in yesterday as it emerged that the new acting chairman had locked out reinstated Eskom chief executive Jacob Maroga from his office.

While Maroga said he had no comment to make last night, key elements in the ruling alliance warned that Maroga's reinstatement as chief executive should not be turned into a racial football.

Last night Maroga was asked about being barred from his office by acting chairman Mpho Makwana and whether he had been in discussions with the board. "I have no comment on that. I have no comment at all," said a sad-sounding and tired Maroga. He declined to answer other questions.

Makwana was not available for comment last night.

Yesterday the pendulum swung in Godsell's favour and away from Maroga, who defied Godsell's announcement that the Eskom board had accepted his resignation and returned to work at Megawatt park in Sandton on Monday. Support for the chief executive poured in last week when he appeared to have been forced to resign and again on Monday when it appeared he was back in the job.

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe, a key defender of Godsell who with then public enterprises minister Alec Erwin got Godsell appointed a year ago as chairman, in no uncertain terms questioned Maroga's use of the race card in explaining the turmoil at the entity.

He joined Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, who expressed disappointment at Godsell's resignation, describing it as a loss to Eskom. Vavi believed Godsell - who became a darling of the union movement when he worked for AngloGold - knew the damage that a tripling in electricity tariffs would do the economy.

The National Union of Mineworkers' Frans Baleni slammed claims that Godsell was a racist. "We say there is no evidence of that," he told Sapa, noting that Godsell had not wanted the job - he had been approached by the government.

Noting that the majority of the Eskom board was black, he said there could be "no racism issue". The government had been "clumsy" in handling the Eskom issue, noting that there was no information coming out of Eskom itself and the government took a long time to make any announcements.

Maroga, in a recent strategy memo to the board, blamed white elements who leaked a report written by coal consultant Susan Olsen, who warned in 2007 of looming coal shortages and stock quality problems. Maroga screamed: "The Olsen report was written by a white person and leaked by a white person to a political party and the media."

While Public Enterprises Minister Barbara Hogan supported the new board, there was no comment forthcoming from Eskom spokesman Andrew Etzinger yesterday. However, a statement is now expected this morning.

Mantashe, meanwhile, slammed the sentiment that there was a racist element in the Eskom debacle. "By beginning to accuse Godsell of being a racist... we know that is far from the truth. We begin to talk of Maroga purely on the basis of blackness. We must focus on the crisis and try to address (it)."

Erwin said it would not be appropriate for him to comment.

Public enterprises portfolio committee chairwoman Vytjie Mentor called for the boards of the nine state-owned enterprises, including Eskom, to be scrapped. She suggested their duties be replaced by government departments. She said failure to address discrepancies between the boards of parastatals and the government could lead to personality clashes.

The Black Management Forum (BMF), headed by labour director-general Jimmy Manyi, last week said in response to Maroga's resignation that the state-owned enterprises were being turned into "slaughterhouses" for black professionals.

"Pushing experienced Africans to leave these positions is aimed at destroying institutional memory."

The ANC Youth League declared Godsell manipulative and racist last week.

Nic Borain, a political analyst, told Moneyweb that it was to Cosatu's enormous credit that it defended Godsell and credited him with attempts to make Eskom equal to the task of providing South Africa with adequate sustainable power.

He said Cosatu was controlled by interests of workers employed in minerals, power generation and manufacturing, while the BMF and the ANC Youth League were political formations whose only interest was in leveraging preferential access to the state for their members' advancement.

"Cosatu is on the side of the angels, standing, as it often does, against the alarming spread of vampire capitalism in this country," said Borain.

LEADERSHIP, Leadership, Leadership!!! This is what was lacking.....by the government, Eskom, Mr Maroga and Mr Godsell. As the central figure embroiled in the debacle, i would have expected Mr Maroga, to step up to the 'challenge' be the bigger and better man and acceptthe decision made. He would have done himself a world of good, and obtained the moral high ground, should later investigation revealed that indeed, he was the victim of ...whatever...! Instead, Mr Godsell outclassed him, when he announced his resignation, clearly stating reasons. Call me racist or anything you want, but this is precisely why, in a great many cases, both politically and in the business world, we as Africans, are being 'outshined' !! Why do we insist on clinging to positions when public sentiment is clearly against us? Is it the pay packages, ego...whatever it is ...it is definitely not worth it. He is not without fault though. My expectation - when the initial announcement was made - was for Mr Godsell to clearly explain, what happened and why it happened, leaving no doubt in the nations' mind....and leaving no room for political manipulation. As a nation we have struggled and achieved much; we are held in high esteem throughout the world for many things.....debacles such as these only detract from the good in the country.....and the nation suffers. Let us (the leadership of this country) be man enough and do the right thing.......always! What is next? Only time will tell!

Who cares if the coal shortage report was written by a pink person and leaked by a red person, was the report correct and what the hell did Maroga do about it.

What a mess this is! It is so sad to see how frequently, incessantly race is brought into every disagreement. It appears this debacle was triggered by sheer lack of performance, so surely that is the only criterion here .. although I must admit that giving the chap a huge salary increase so recently has muddied the water. Whatever is happening, it is tarnishing South Africa's name globally. That is a real tragedy.

Is'nt it funny?! Over the weekend all the comment columns were filled to the brim with black knee-jerk reactions over racist Godsell's actions in sacking Maroga (while the truth is that the board sacked him). Now that another black board member blocks Maroga, there are virtually no negative black reactions!

This is one of the saddest days for our democracy! We can see that the ANC is run along racist cadre lines, irrespective of whether the cadres cost our country so far in excess of R300 billion (not million) due to poor management. Now clearly we see that ANC policy dictates that 'Black is right and white is wrong'!

Unfortunately we will have to go through the complete demise of this country as have the rest of Africa. Africans not learning their lessons.

I like the first comment from Jakes. What is indeed ANCYL and BMF going to say now. Will there ever be any comment about the lock out. Is the acting Chairman maybe not white inside? He could then be a racist you know.

I think SA should start avoiding everything being labeled as being black or white. I also think that we should stop supporting people because they are black or they are white. I don't know much about Maroga as a CEO, whether he is the right person or not. But I believe if he resigned and the board supported that then we should all support them. Why on earth will the ANC Youth League not support that? Is it because of his colour? Is it becaue the ANC don't want to get their hands dirty? Let us all build this country not on selfish ideas but really looking at the whole country.
