Toyota production due to increase 41%
January 22, 2008
Toyota South Africa aims to increase production at its assembly plant at Prospecton in Durban by 41 percent to 205 000 units this year, with more than half of these destined for the export market.
Brian Eades, Toyota SA's general manager marketing communications, said yesterday the company had not yet been affected by power cuts, as it had an arrangement with the Durban municipality not to cut its electricity.
Toyota Motor ranked Toyota SA ninth in total sales, with a contribution of 152 821 units.
This total excluded export sales by Toyota SA of 59 378 Hilux and Corolla vehicles last year. Johan van Zyl, president and group chief executive of Toyota SA, said the unit's total domestic and export sales for last year of 212 559 vehicles represented 3.1 percent of total Toyota sales outside of Japan.
Van Zyl said the company was preparing for the full-scale export of Corolla to Europe. - Roy Cokayne
