Microsoft tests notebooks in Japan
April 5, 2006
Microsoft is looking to tap demand for notebook PCs in Japan by testing its new Origami laptops in schools.
The PCs, smaller than conventional laptops with almost the same power, would be used at a primary school in Kyoto, Microsoft mobile platforms vice-president Bill Mitchell said yesterday.
Microsoft was trying to break into Japan's market because consumers in that country were found to be some of the world's most advanced users of mobile devices, Mitchell said.
The company said PBJ, a Tokyo-based maker of touch panels, would sell the first of the new computers in Japan on April 14 for ¥99 800 (R5 200). - Bloomberg, Tokyo
