Transet rail strike off as fresh talks begin March 3, 2006
By Staff Reporter
Johannesburg - Threats of a nationwide Transnet strike on Monday have been averted by negotiations set to take place this weekend.
A major strike, which would have included train drivers, had been called by the leading transport unions and Cosatu, said South African Transport and Allied Workers union chairman Jerome Fortune.
"A strike was planned for Monday but has been postponed to a date not yet set," he said.
Metrorail spokeswoman Riana Scott said: "The unions will give a formal notification to Transnet who will inform Metrorail who can then warn the public. But it's still early days."
The Transnet workers are unhappy about restructuring plans which would see more than 10 non-core units of Transnet sold off.
