Naspers has 'satisfactory growth'
November 26, 2009
Media group Naspers experienced "satisfactory growth" for the six months ended September 30, the JSE-listed company said on Thursday.
Core headline earnings per share rose 36 percent to 648 cents per share while revenue grew six percent to R13.5 billion.
The company was bolstered by the performances from its internet and pay-television segments. The print media segment remained under pressure.
Naspers -- the owner of Africa's DSTV network -- said its subscribers had grown by 352 000 for the six-month period.
SuperSport was now the largest funder of sport in Africa. The company said that in South Africa its base grew by 238 000 gross to 2.639 million households.
The compact bouquet delivered growth of 132 000 gross subscribers, Naspers said. Advertising revenues, however, decreased in line with consumer spending.
In the rest of sub-Saharan Africa the company's base grew by 114 000 gross to 1.030 million homes.
"The lower-priced compact/family bouquets now reach 391 000 homes."
Globally print operations felt the full impact of economic headwinds. Naspers said its print operations in South Africa showed no topline growth due to weak advertising revenues.
"In general, the circulation of our magazines and newspapers proved remarkably resilient, but the book publishing business suffered due to government spending patterns."
The printing business, Paarl Media, had only marginal revenue growth.
In Brazil Naspers' Abril experienced similar trends, with marginal revenue growth and a lower operating profit.
Abril had also implemented tougher cost controls. - Sapa
