Zuma hints to Shaik that he could go back to jail
November 25, 2009
President Jacob Zuma has pointed out to his former financial adviser, Schabir Shaik, who is currently on medical parole from jail, that he could face a reprimand, or having his parole terms altered.
Giving a written reply to a Parliamentary question on Wednesday from Anele Mda of the Congress of the People, the president said that the Correctional Services Act sets out the procedure to be followed where there are allegations of non-compliance with parole conditions.
"I am informed," the president added, "that the Department of Correctional Services has not received any formal complaint alleging non-compliance by the person referred to."
Zuma also said that the Minister of Correctional Services has requested the National Council for Correctional Services (chaired by Judge Siraj Desai) to review the legislative provisions of medical parole.
"This request has been made because a number of problems exist with regard to the implementation of the current medical parole system," he said.
"The National Council is expected to submit their report to the Minister by the end of November 2009."
In the same reply Zuma discussed his appointment of an inter-ministerial team to look at the problems of corruption.
"This Inter-Ministerial Committee will study the report and recommendations on corruption issued by the Public Service Commission and other reports," he said. - I-Net Bridge
