Eskom CEO Jacob Maroga is out  Comments
November 12, 2009

By Louise Flanagan

"The Eskom board confirms that Mr Maroga's offer to resign was clear and unambigous and was accepted by the board on 28 October," said acting board chairman Mpho Makwana.

He said he would remain acting chair until a new chair and CEO were appointed "within 90 days", and spoke of the need to "heal this organisation".

The announcement was made at Eskom headquarters in Megawatt Park in Sunninghill today.

Maroga's position has been uncertain since he reportedly offered his resignation at an Eskom board meeting on October 28.

A week later the then board chairman Bobby Godsell told Eskom staff that Maroga had resigned, but then cancelled a planned public announcement on the matter.
Rumours then surfaced that Maroga was contesting his departure but Maroga refused to comment.

If Maroga had been fired, he would have been eligible for a multi-million rand golden handshake.

Godsell announced his resignation from the board on Monday, saying Maroga had resigned and that the government had failed to support the board.

Since then the board, the government and Eskom have all avoided commenting on the leadership crisis.

Why did the government not upgrade the power stations 15 years ago when they were warned about the developing problems? Yes apartheid was a terrible time for many, but the government has been a democracy for 15 years now with the power to change things so why have they chosen inaction which has made the situation worse instead of better? Ask yourself why the common man still struggles to get basic services while Mr Zuma and company all live in large fancy houses and drive big fancy cars. I bet none of them has had to struggle for power or water or basic services.

A sad ending to a sad tale. Maroga's ill-advice has finally sunk him. Worse, as the board said, he doesn't get the plum golden handshake he could have amassed for refusing to budge and then get fired. Clearly, his silence for the past two weeks is an indication of a man who shot himself in the foot. He will go down in history as a perfect case study for embattled CEO's: The golden rule is never agree to walk away quietly. Make a lot of noise and refuse to budge. Ask Armscor's embattled CEO, Sipho Thomo who has been given the marching orders just a year or so into a new contract. Watch the space, Thomo will walk away with a bulging wallet because not only did he rebutt moves to axe him, he did so publicly and therefore forced the hand of the board to fire him - something which Maroga avoided for two weeks. Maroga should have been smarter not to walk away with 'peanuts' - for a man who took the flack trying to keep every Jack and Gill's lights burning. It's a tough job for anyone - and a thankless one even towards the end.

I really think both the board and Jacob has handle this matter badly. One thing is certaing Maroga inherited the mess since the gorvement refused to upgrade the power station on Eskom advise and now he is being made a scape goat .

Right, lets move on to Sipho Thomo and Armscor.

I feel sorry for dudes who are suffering from the shameful indoctrination that black correlates with incompetence. There is increasing consciousness amongst black youth as they realise that their gracious heart of forgiving is being pricked with a new form of marginalisation on the corporate arena, with advantage being taken of government's ignorance to engage in anti-transformation acts. With the status quo one can only warn that South Africa might plunge into civil war based on racial prejudice and anger, and now with all races having equal access to ammunition and technology, it requires no genius to position the see-saw.
