Exxaro Resources had officially opened its char plant alongside the Grootegeluk coal mine at Lephalale in Limpopo yesterday, the company said yesterday. "The opening marks Exxaro's entry into the char market with a highly beneficiated product serving as a key ingredient in the ferroalloys manufacturing industry," it said. The plant would produce 140 000 tons a year and would reach full capacity by December, said Mxolisi Mgojo, Exxaro's general manager of commodity operations. Char contains more than 80 percent fixed carbon and less than 5 percent volatile content. The plant is the first business unit of Exxaro Reductants and the result of Exxaro's focus on downstream beneficiation opportunities in the coal market, specifically in the production of reductants for the ferroalloys industry. - Sapa
