Political parties welcome Maroga's resignation  Comments
November 5, 2009

Jacob Maroga's resignation as Eskom CEO will give way for top management restructuring at the electricity utility, will stabilise it and attract international investors into the country, political parties said on Thursday.

"Maroga simply could not manage the electricity supplier efficiently and even failed to appoint competent executive management to salvage the crisis situation at Eskom," said Solidarity spokesman Jaco Kleynhans.

He said this a few hours after Eskom chairman Bobby Godsell told the utility's employees that its CEO had tendered his resignation.

On addressing the workers at a staff meeting attended by Sapa journalists at Megawatt Park, Johannesburg on Thursday at noon, Godsell said the utility had accepted Maroga's resignation and that they "wished him well in his future endeavours".

"The time has come for renewal in Eskom's management and that is exactly why Maroga's resignation is welcomed," said Kleynhans.

The FF Plus also welcomed Maroga's resignation, saying the new developments at the country's electricity utility would restore stability at Eskom and attract investors.

"His resignation will bring more certainty and investors will be more interested in South Africa now. Workers, middle and senior managers at Eskom will also be more motivated to do their work," spokesman Pieter Groenewald said.

He added that Maroga should not be given "a golden handshake" as he did not deserve any bonus.

"He has proven himself to be incompetent. We also call on government to not redeploy Maroga in any other public enterprise as chief executive officer," Groenewald said.

The Independent Democrats also welcomed Maroga's resignation saying he did the "honourable thing" by resigning as CEO.

"Given the persistence of problems at Eskom the ID believes that Jacob Maroga has done the honourable thing by resigning as CEO," said Lance Greyling, the party's spokesman on energy affairs.

Maroga's resignation, however, should not be construed to be a solution to the crisis situation Eskom finds itself in, he said.

"The ID therefore believes that we need a far more transparent and accountable energy governance system in South Africa, which will thoroughly scrutinise the actions of Eskom and involve all South Africans in deciding on our future energy choices.

"This unholy alliance between the energy regulator, the department of energy and Eskom must come to an end so as to create a competitive energy system in which our energy choices can be made in the interest of all South Africans," said Greyling. - Sapa

Can anyone please tell me as to why we as tax-payers, rate-payers, never had these problems in the previous govt. ie. crime, embezzelment of public funds, bribery and corruption and murder.

To Condemn Jacob Maroga after 2 years at the helm of what in effect was a sinking ship seems a bit harsh. Having been appointed from within and having spent a good number of years at Theftkom it would be interesting to hear the opinions of his senior line managers and those people who actually keep the turbines running. (Despite the best efforts of the board and political incompetence.) Being from another utility provider that is following in Eskoms footsteps, I can sympathise.

The Eskom problems is not a new issue as it surfaced ealry into our democracy. The really problem is the capacity issue as ernergy supply cannot be enough with the current plants (reserves) thie is because only consumption has drastically increased by making electricity affordable to almost every South African citizen. This was only done without increasing the capacity issue and Maroga is just one of the unfortunate people to be thrown in the deep end and expected to take the blame for his predecessors.

Honestly this is the demise of a common sense. To begin with, he warned the government about the possible black outs, or should i say electricity problem. Then the government response was the classic one to the matter and now he has to take the bullet, its madness. He did the right thing by resigning, however, I am not suprised by the comments made by the likes of ID, FF, and Solidarity- to them there can never be a black man whose competent and be succesful, that is common knowledge and that attitude should end. Mr Maroga you've tried your best and the government failed you as they forever do to many of us

ANCYL leaders and spokes persons are really embarrassing themselves with all their public statements and comments these days. Who really cares if Maroga was asked/encouraged/forced to resign and by whom. The fact of the matter is he did not perform. He did nothing to plan ahead and he did not appoint the right people for the job to find solutions to the energy crisis. I am sorry, but this is just another opportunity to play the racism card... Colour has nothing to do with it. Maybe now they can appoint the right person to fix the problems at ESKOM.

looks like the racist ancyl got it wrong yet again. http://www.sowetan.co.za/News/Article.aspx?id=1085290 once again proves that they are out to "rock the boat" of racism.
