Mining: Solidarity to seek pay rise

Solidarity would begin wage negotiations over a 10 percent pay rise demand with platinum producer Lonmin, the trade union said yesterday. Solidarity said it would also demand a "market-related" increase in housing allowances for mine workers, artisans and officials. The first round of talks would take place today and tomorrow. The union said it had already reached agreements with the coal and gold producers for hikes of between 9 percent and 11 percent. Last week, the National Union of Mineworkers said that Lonmin had rejected its 25 percent pay rise demand and instead offered only 5 percent - Reuters
