Fifa gets trade centre lollipopos banned
October 2, 2009
The High Court in Pretoria ruled in favour of the world soccer body Fifa this week, prohibiting Trade Centre stores from selling lollipops in wrappers with pictures of the South African flag and a soccer ball.
Business Day reported on Friday the court ruled that the ball on the packaging featured the official ball of a previous Fifa tournament.
Fifa said the ball, and the name of the lollipop, 2010 Pops, took advantage of 2010 Soccer World Cup publicity.
Metcash, which owns the Trade Centre stores, contravened the Merchandise Marks Act, the court ruled on Thursday.
"The ruling is clear," said Fifa lawyer Kelly Thompson, of Adams & Adams law firm.
"Those attempting to benefit from the publicity surrounding the 2010 Fifa World Cup without paying sponsorship fees could land themselves in very hot water." - Sapa
