Climate change 'hearings' underway at Sasol
September 10, 2009
Dozens of Secunda residents protested outside the Sasol headquarters in Rosebank on Thursday.
A trial by Earthlife Africa on "Sasol's climate change crimes" was held outside Sasol's offices between 10am and 2pm on Thursday.
Earthlife Africa said on Monday that Sasol is one of the worst emitters of greenhouse gases on the African continent. It said Sasol produces 75.4 million tons of greenhouse gases annually about 21 percent of South Africa's total greenhouse gas emissions per year.
The environmental lobby group also said that the company was owner of the single largest emitter of carbon dioxide (CO2) at its Secunda plant.
"Given that South Africa is the world's most carbon intensive economy and Sasol's Secunda plant is the world's single biggest emitter of CO2, one would expect a greater commitment by Sasol to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions," the organisation said.
According to Primedia's Eye Witness News, Sasol residents say their health is suffering because of the pollution caused by Sasol at its Secunda plant in Mpumalanga. Earthlife's Triston Taylor said the company needed to start taking the issue seriously.
"The advice the doctors give to the children, who suffer from asthma and other lung-related diseases, is to move because the air quality is so bad," said Taylor. I-Net Bridge
