Bangladesh strips to save power
September 4, 2009

The Bangladeshi prime minister has ordered public servants to ditch suits for short sleeves to cut air conditioning use in the power-starved nation.

Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain said: "The prime minister pointed out that aircon is a luxury and if we wear the lighter clothing we will need to use the aircon less. I've already noticed top public servants are no longer wearing suits and ties."

The official dress code for civil servants, written in 1982, was this week altered to accommodate Sheikh Hasina's orders. Last month her state unveiled a $6 billion (R47bn) power plant building scheme to end a chronic energy shortage in the expanding economy.
