Nelson Mandela Bay Metro plans to install 100 000 solar water heaters over the next five years, using high-pressure geysers in mid-income households and cheaper low-pressure geysers in low-income households.
The roll-out was set to replace conventional electric geysers in more than two-thirds of the metro's 140 000 households, said George Ferreira, the project consultant and former executive director for the metro's electricity and energy unit.
The first installations were due to start before the end of the year.
The high-pressure geyser initiative is a partnership with the state's Central Energy Fund (CEF), and will harness funding through a mix of Eskom's subsidy scheme, carbon credits, donor aid and discounts for the purchase of bulk volumes.
The CEF has received about ' bids to supply solar water heaters under the plan. The geysers must comply with the requirements of Eskom's subsidy programme. - Ingi Salgado
