Inflation stays at steady levels
August 19, 2009

British inflation unexpectedly held steady last month, official data showed yesterday, but economists still expect big falls in the annual rate this year and monetary policy to stay loose for some time to come.

The Office for National Statistics said consumer prices were unchanged last month, keeping the annual rate at 1.8 percent, just below the 2 percent target.

The broader measure of retail price index inflation - on which many wage deals are based - picked up to minus 1.4 percent last month from minus 1.6 percent in June. - Reuters
