Zimbabwe makes tracks with China February 19, 2007
Johannesburg - Zimbabwe has begun rehabilitating its railway lines after receiving a shipment of about 12 000 tons of rail from China, Harare's Herald Online reported on Monday.
The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) said this was part of a turnaround strategy aimed at boosting traffic along rail routes.
NRZ spokesman Fanuel Masikati said the rehabilitation began in January with the Victoria Falls-Bulawayo route being the first railway line to be upgraded.
"Our first area of operation is the Victoria Falls-Bulawayo route," he said.
"The rehabilitation of the north railway line began in January and has seen 54 welded rails covering 3.8 kilometres being transported to the site."
The rehabilitation was a nationwide programme by the parastatal to improve its service delivery and increase its capacity, said Masikati.
"We have a programmed maintenance plan in place to ensure safety and we will adhere to strategies that will make sure that we cover all areas that need our attention."
The parastatal had set 10 million tons of traffic as its target for 2007, was optimistic that the figure would be surpassed.
NRZ recently received a much-awaited consignment of 12 000 tonnes of rail from China which it was using for the rehabilitation programme. - Sapa
