SA needs to adapt to keep high standard of accounting
2010-09-02 04:00:01
South Africa has long been reputed to produce some of the world's best auditors. This was given credence when the World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Survey for 2009 to 2010 ranks us second out of 133 countries for our auditing and reporting standards. We are in the top 10 for eight other measures of financial market sophistication, and for a country that is only the world's 24th largest... [Full Story...0 Comments

ANC raises valid issues, but its solution is dead wrong  Comment
2010-08-16 04:00:01
I got a great deal of feedback on my column last week on the ANC's planned onslaught against media freedom. This is always very gratifying as it shows me that first, people read me (thanks, guys) and second, that they care about what's going on in their world.

Since Marco Polo returned from China in the 13th century, the country has been seen by Western investors as a land of economic opportunity. Polo's account of his adventures and discoveries may not have been entirely accurate but it made a jolly good read and it held the public imagination in the West for centuries.

Pale face of renewables winds up the minister  Comment

On the handful of occasions I have met her, Energy Minister Dipuo Peters has been a model of niceness. Nice is not a word that everyone likes - often those to whom the term seldom applies. It's probably not a parameter in Peters' employment contract. But it is an admirable quality to cultivate.

Joburg - Durban rail link is a very fast way to debt  Comment
2010-08-30 04:00:01
The financial aspects of the proposed Johannesburg to Durban high-speed rail link (Business Report, August 25) need a little analysis to try to bring them down to earth. The distance between the cities is around 600km. This is about eight times the total route length of the Gautrain project, so by a simple proportion, the cost can be expected to be around R220 billion.
